Mole Mapping

MOLE MAPPING IS A COMPREHENSIVE CLINICAL SKIN EXAMINATION INCLUDING DERMOSCOPY
TO IDENTIFY, EVALUATE AND MONITOR LESIONS OF CONCERN

What is Mole Mapping?

Mole mapping is a way of digitally recording the whole body’s skin surface. By doing so, these images can be referred to at a later date to see if there are any new skin lesions, or whether any pre- existing skin lesions have changed in size, shape  or colour. Through regular screening skin lesions, which may be cancerous, can be detected early and removed.

Who should try Mole Mapping?

We encourage all of our patients with skin lesions or moles to have a mole mapping consultation, in particular people with:

– Multiple moles

– Moles of different shapes and sizes

– Moles in areas difficult  to see such as your scalp and back

– Fair skin

– History of significant sunburn

– Previous personal history or family history of melanoma

What to expect from a Mole Mapping consultation

You will be seen by a qualified doctor who is trained in this area. A full medical history will be taken to assess your risk factors for developing skin cancers. A complete  skin examination will be performed and digital photographs will be taken, recording all moles and skin lesions. Any suspicious moles will be looked at more carefully with a dermatoscope which allows the doctor to examine the mole, in greater detail, looking for any internal structural changes suggestive of skin cancer.
